A leader's singular job is to get results. But even with all the leadership training programs and "expert" advice available, effective leadership still eludes many people and organizations. One reason, says Daniel Goleman, is that such experts offer advice based on inference, experience, and instinct, not on quantitative data. Now, drawing on research of more than 3,000 executives, Goleman explores which precise leadership behaviors yield positive results. He outlines six distinct leadership styles, each one springing from different components of emotional intelligence. Each style has a distinct effect on the working atmosphere of a company, division, or team, and, in turn, on its financial performance. Coercive leaders demand immediate compliance. Authoritative leaders mobilize people toward a vision. Affiliative leaders create emotional bonds and harmony. Democratic leaders build consensus through participation. Pacesetting leaders expect excellence and self-direction. And coaching leaders develop people for the future. The research indicates that leaders who get the best results don't rely on just one leadership style; they use most of the styles in any given week. Goleman details the types of business situations each style is best suited for, and he explains how leaders who lack one or more of these styles can expand their repertories. He maintains that with practice leaders can switch among leadership styles to produce powerful results, thus turning the art of leadership into a science.

The present report summarizes the contents of the first edition of the “European Academy for Healthcare Leaders”, held in Rome from the 15th to 17th of November 2018 and organised by the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) on Health Policy, Governance and Leadership in Europe of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Roma. The aim of the event was to offer a high level training on leadership and governance of health systems to the representatives of the Ministries of Health of the Member States of WHO European Region. It was organized in a mixed format, including both traditional lecture sessions from experts in the field and interactive workshops. The contents regarded the role of leadership in facing health systems global challenges; the vision, the leadership and the governance of the WHO; the leadership needed to reorganize health systems according to the value based healthcare perspective; health systems sustainability; change management and the developing of leadership skills.

Nel sistema sanitario sono state introdotte diverse nuove tecnologie, così come nuovi modi di fare diagnosi, nuovi farmaci, nuove strategie per personalizzare la terapia. Introdurre l’innovazione richiede uno sforzo considerevole da parte dei decisori sanitari. Infatti, ogni innovazione può avere un impatto in termini di alterazione dei percorsi diagnostici e clinici, ma anche in termini di processi, strutture organizzative, fornitura di servizi e interventi, costi. Di fronte a questi continui cambiamenti, è necessario sostenere la crescita di medici leader in questo ambito: lo sviluppo della leadership dovrebbe iniziare già alla facoltà di medicina. I sistemi sanitari dovrebbero identificare potenziali leader, caratterizzati da intelligenza, cultura medica profonda, umanità e passione, coinvolgendoli in task force, comitati, squadre in ritiro periodico, protetti dall’influenza dell’industria farmaceutica, programmi di formazione esperienziale. Grazie alla formazione relativa agli aspetti organizzativi, di comunicazione e di team build-ing, i nuovi leader medici possono padroneggiare competenze chiave come la pianificazione strategica e la gestione del cambiamento. Il supporto continuo, attraverso un sistema di tutoraggio da parte di altri leader, aumenterà l’intelligenza emotiva, facilitando i processi decisionali e migliorando le capacità di comunicazione e collaborazione. Adottando strategie come quelle descritte, il sistema sanitario raggiungerà l’efficienza e l’efficacia organizzative necessarie per prevenire gli sprechi e per garantire i benefici dell’innovazione farmacologica e tecnologica a tutte le parti interessate.
