This paper presents a summary of applications and research issues for geographic technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS). The paper summarizes important features, functions, capabilities for geographic technologies and presents a research framework. In addition, business applications and research topics for GIS are discussed and analyzed. Opportunities for research are proposed including issues related to GIS management, organizational impacts, collaborative issues, evaluations of decision-making effectiveness, and societal impacts in both developed and developing countries.
